You are a seventeen-year-old woman, Elizabeth, in 1593 living in an European village. You are well known as a healer of sorts. You provide medicines for the sick, which heal men, women, and children, just as your mother did before she died. Everyone respects you.
Strange things have been happening in the village. First there was Abigail who began convulsing where her body contorted in unusual positions, and she babbled incoherently. Then her friend, Margaret, began having the same type of fits. While you have looked after both girls and given them healing potions, they still seem to be having these fits no matter what you do.

You have just come from Margaret’s house after giving her a potion that finally healed her.
Margaret’s brother, George, offers to escort you to the gate as you leave. You have always liked George.
“I am in your debt forever,” he tells you.
“Don’t be ridiculous.” You smile. “You owe nothing.”
“I have gotten to know you quite well over the last weeks. I must say, I await your visits daily. And now that you have cured my sister, you have no reason to stop by.” He frowns.
“I continue checking on my patients from time to time. Why do you seem saddened by this fact?”
“It is my hope that we,” he paused. “That we could spend the day together.”
[[“Of course. I would love that.”]] You like George and want to be with him.
[[“I’m sorry, but I cannot.”]] You like George, but you cannot get involved. You and George spend the day together and have a picnic. After a few days of spending time with each other, George proposes. You say yes, knowing your father praises the match.
When you return home after the proposal, you share the good news with your father. You and your father have a celebratory dinner.
Sometime late in the night, John’s sister, Veronica, frantically knocks on the door. Tear-stained cheeks, she informs you all that her husband died.
When asked how, she takes a deep breath and answers. “I killed him. He was a witch hunter. All these years.”
You gasp. “He did not know you were a witch?”
“Of course not,” she answers. “Humans are always out to kill us.”
“What? No. George isn’t.”
“He will the moment he knows you’re a witch.”
“I’m certain he will not.”
“You need to end this proposal,” your father says. “Or we will be ruined. You’ve already healed two people having fits. They are already suspicious.”
[[Decide to end things with George.]]
[[Decide to tell George the truth and run away with him.]]
[[Leave in the middle of the night with your family.]]
While you like George, he is human, and if he gets to know you, he will find out you are a witch and turn you in. Plus, you don’t want to hurt him.
Things go well for weeks. No fits are reported until one day you are walking in the village when Margaret and George are walking toward you. She doesn’t look well. Her face is pale, she’s sweating, and she’s gasping for air.
She falls to her knees, but George catches her. “You must do something!” George cries.
You check her forehead. “What happened?”
With a darkness in Margaret's eyes, she stares at you. “You did this.” She continues convulsing until the second you lay your hand on hers. You realize she's lying because you know you cannot heal by touch.
"You-you stopped her convulsing," George says.
Many people stare as they walk by and start whispering.
"You're a witch!" Margaret cries and faints.
Villagers gasp and two men charge toward you. One grabs you and shackles your hands behind your back.
"You are hereby under arrest for the practice of witchcraft."
[[Go willingly with them.]]
[[Escape.]]As they escort you to the prison, bystanders shout and throw pebbles at you.
“Burn her!”
“She deserves to die!”
You pass by two friends, Danielle and Graham. They look at you as if they fear for their lives. They were not among those who cried out their fears or threw things, but the terror in their eyes was enough. You feel so betrayed.
The guards continue to escort you. You reach the courtroom where everyone from the town is packed inside together, filling each corner and taking every ounce of oxygen. It is hot not only from the bodies, but from their anger.

They force you to sit before the entire village. The magistrate hurls questions at you so fast you can't think. “Are you a witch? Do you practice witchcraft? Did you murder the people with a disease?”
[[Plead Guilty.]]
[[Maintain your innocence.]]You use a spell to break the shackles. The guards fall to the ground, but as you begin to run, something hits you in the head knocking you unconscious.
When you wake, you realize you're shackled once again, and inside the hot courtroom.

[[Plead Guilty.]]
[[Maintain your innocence.]]You plead guilty. Yes, you injured and killed all those girls, but they deserved it. They killed your sister because they were jealous of her.
“Elizabeth Bishop, you are hereby sentenced to death by hanging for killing dozens.”
The courtroom erupts with cheers and you clench my teeth and shake your head. These people can't kill you. You'll escape.
The guards throw you into a dark, clammy cell with cold stone walls that have a barred window too high for you to reach.
You begin touching the walls of the cell, realizing how many witches died in that prison. Which means you can draw magic from it in order to escape.
Placing your hand on the wall, you siphon the magic. Even though you feel powerful, you have to use the magic in small increments, otherwise, you will pass out.
There is one guard near you, but you know there are others around the tunnels.
[[Distract the nearest guard first.]]
[[Damage the cell bars enough for you to slip through.]]
“No, I am innocent,” you say.
“I have testimonies from several people claiming you are the one who made them ill. There have been thirteen deaths in two weeks.”
“I am innocent! I only have tried healing many of you.”
“Are there others to blame for this?” You realize nothing you say can get you out of this. If you point your finger at someone else, they will be killed and you don't want innocent people to die.
“It was me and only me,” you concede.
Gasps and shouts sound in the humid room.
“Elizabeth Bishop, you are hereby sentenced to death by hanging for killing dozens.”
The courtroom erupts with cheers and you clench your teeth, still holding back the lump in your throat. No one defended you. You stare out into the riotous room and meet George’s eyes. Your heart sinks as you feel so betrayed.

You grip one of the cell bars and stare at one of the guards from afar. Concentrating on him, you imagine his blood boiling.
He collapses to the ground.
You feel woozy, but you concentrate on the cell bars, damaging them so you can slip through.
Once you walk through, you hear another guard approaching.
[[Use magic on him.]]
[[Run the other way.]]You slip through, but the nearest guard sees you. He quickly reacts and knocks you unconscious.
You wake up inside a different cell, this time with two guards outside.
[[Kill them both.]]
[[Place a sleep spell on both.]]You place a spell on the approaching guard, putting him to sleep.
You feel yourself growing tired from all the magic you've used. You need to find a place and rest, but first you must escape.
[[Place an invisibility spell on yourself.]] If you continue using magic, you could pass out.
[[Quietly make your way through the tunnels without using magic.]] Without using magic, you risk getting caught. You place an invisibility spell on yourself, and quietly make your way through the tunnels.
You approach two guards with torches, and concentrate heavily on your spell hoping they cannot see you.
You remain as quiet as possible.
The two guards pause for a moment, then keep walking.
Exhausted, your invisibility spell fades. You continue through the tunnels until it ends with three separate tunnels.

You are left to survive on your own, but you are a witch. Survival is part of your nature.
Congratulations. You survived the witch trials.

George seems oddly calm, but he loves you so it shouldn’t matter that you’re a witch.
“Run away with me,” he says.
“What?”
“We can live together without worrying about all of this.”
“You aren’t afraid of me?”
“Absolutely not.” He kisses your hands. “You saved my sister. Let us fetch some essentials and we’ll leave at first sight of dawn.”
[[Agree to run away with him.]]
[[Say yes but remain wary.]]You and your family decide to leave in the middle of the night. You don't want to leave without saying goodbye to George.
You sneak out and run to George's home.
You frantically explain to him that you have to leave.
"What? Why?" he asks.
"I cannot say. I love you, George."
"I know what you are, Elizabeth, and it doesn't frighten me. Let's run away together."
"What? No, you can't."
"I love you, and the only thing that matters to me is being with you."
Suddenly, someone screams from within his house.
You both run inside and see Margaret babbling and convulsing violently. Her father frantically paces the room.

"What is going on?" you ask.
George moves in front of you. “Elizabeth Bishop, you are hereby ordered to court as you have practiced black magic, injuring dozens in this town including Margaret and Abigail.”
"What? No! George, please!" You cry but he ignores you. Your heart breaks. He never loved you. Or perhaps your confession changed everything.
"Take her to jail."

You take her hand and heal her a little—not too much since you don’t want anyone knowing you’re a witch.
When she’s less pale and breathing normally, she grabs onto George with a quizzical expression on her face. She and George exchange a look.
“You’re a witch,” she whispers.
You blush a little. “Yes, but I only heal people. I never want to harm anyone.”
Her eyes narrow. “That isn’t what Abigail told me. She said your entire family are witches and that you’re going to kill everyone in it.”
“What? No.”
